In 1890, the third floor was built, thereby increasing the capacity
of the hotel and improving the services offered. But a hotel with
more floors meant more stairs to climb, which was why in 1904 an
elevator was brought from Switzerland, the first in Latin America, and
continues
in service to this day.
Throughout its long period of service, important figures of Mexican
history have been guests in the elegant rooms of the hotel, some
even changing the course of the country’s history from there. Benito
Juárez used the hotel as his base for ruling the country for a
few months, Porfirio Díaz lodged there during his visits to the
port as governor and on his last visit, before leaving for exile
in France and Victoriano Huerta acted as President of Mexico and
named his cabinet
in the hotel. |
