The history of Hotel Imperial began in 1650 with the construction of
a tower used for surveillance of the port of Veracruz to protect
it from pirate attacks and invasions.
One hundred years later, the
first floor of the building was built with plans to turn it into
a convent until the businessman, Don Fernando
Bustillos García, knight of the Calatrava order, bought it,
built a second floor and developed it into a place for lodging known
as a meson or Inn.
In 1793 the hotel was inaugurated as the first luxury
Inn of Veracruz, offering individual rather than collective bedrooms,
more common at
the time, and the services of a restaurant, café, room service
and bathrooms. From its inauguration to the present day, the hotel
has been in continuous service.
